INDEPENDENT POWER GENERATION FOR SOUTHWEST NIGERIA – IPGSN
a few years ago ...
In 2004, a group of three students from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and two students from the Pennsylvania State University, USA worked on a research project titled ‘Solar Energy for Rural Nigeria (SERN)’. The project was a participation in the 2004 UNESCO/DiamlerChrysler Mondialogo Engineering programme. Debo Onifade led the University of Ibadan student team while Greg Rybka of the Pennsylvania State University was the overall team lead. One of the objectives of the project organizers was to foster a continued multi-cultural and international collaborations among the student participants even after the project period. This in turn was expected to bring about technological growth to some developing countries in a near future, and the project teams were therefore made up of members from a developed country and a developing country.

the concept …
After Debo’s graduation and subsequent employment, he kept his friendship with Greg and the two of them agreed to do more research together in a near future, especially with a fundamental view of tackling a serious technological and industrial problem in Nigeria.
the opportunity …
One major predicament that has greatly hindered
development in Nigeria and indeed
most parts of Africa had been lack of adequate and good electricity supply. The Nigerian government recently liberalized the industry, giving room for direct private sector participation and opening up tremendous research and business opportunities for upcoming engineers. Debo saw this as a great opportunity it formed the genesis of IPGSN in November 2006. Team formation and researh work commenced thereafter.
